Statement of Intent:
What is your chosen theme and why have you chosen to study this?
My chosen theme for this project is portraits and I will be trying to research a variety of different photographers whose portraits give me some inspiration. It’s important to research other photographers who explore portraits because there are different types of photography techniques like poses, street photography, traditional portraits, self portrait and close up portraits. So it’s important to research the different photographers so that you have an idea of how to take these pictures.
What research do you intend to carry out based on this theme?
To make my chosen theme to be the best it can be I will need to research different photographers for example Annie Leibovitz, Magdiel Lopez and Peter Lindernburgh I am choosing to research these photographers because their photos are high quality and I choose to imitate them. Annie Leibovitz’s work is known for doing dramatic, quirky and iconic portraits of celebrities. Magdiel Lopez’s work is known for doing surreal portraits which are a mixture of design and art. Peter Lindernburgh is known for fashion photography which is taking photographs of models highlighting their beauty and joy for advertising boards or photoshoots for magazine covers.
What photoshoots do you intend to complete during the project to help explore the chosen topic?
I intend to capture a variety of photos to put on my website to show my improvement in my chosen topic “portraits”. I aspire to take about 10-15 photographs of each person in my group in school. All of my photographs will be taken with a few ideas from the photographers that I have mentioned above. The location of my photoshoots will be inside school with a tripod, backdrop and lights being used. If the weather is sunny it could also be on the school fields. School also provides trips for example to Salford Quays. Salford Quays is a really good location to do a photoshoot because there are really good views and places that will make your photos more outgoing. This is really important because it can give you an opportunity to take a variety of photographs to increase your knowledge and so you can put on your website to show your journey. The angles of the architecture in the background could make my photos more dramatic. It's important for me to keep my angles perfect because if I get an angle wrong it can have a negative effect on my photographs.
Which artist, photographers and galleries do you intend to research in order to support this project?
I will be researching photographers such as Magdiel Lopez and Annie Lebovitz. I have chosen both of these photographers because they both have the same goal as their final outcomes but in different styles which means I am able to try out two different styles/types of portrait. I will then go to a different location and keep taking images of everyone in my group and try to use the rule of thirds, central focal point and I could take images from birds and worm's eye view and experience taking images using different types of angles. I will be testing out the different camera settings such as the ISO, Shutter Speed, F Stop and White Balance

This type of photography is known as portrait photography. In this photograph I see a man looking into the distance with a blank expression. In my opinion this photograph gives us the impression that the man is hurt in some way or quite depressed by his facial expressions. In my opinion this shows because of the way the photographer has edited this image by applying a black and white theme which highlights that he is feeling dull. The man could be depressed because of the way he is looking in the distance and he is showing a blank expression. In this image the photographer has used double exposure and applied trees that may show the way he is feeling. The trees are placed on his hair and neck, it is made in the way to show us that he has a lot of thoughts going on in his head. In the image the model is in the middle of the image as a central focal point and is sat at an angle from the viewer facing to the left showing the side of his face. The foreground in this image is in the man's face because it's the first thing you see and it's in focus. The middle ground in this image are the trees because it's the second closest object to the man's face and is in focus too. The background in this image is a very light grey colour because it's behind the model. The photographer has used this plain background to make the man's face be the focus of the image.
Composition:
The compositional rules which the photographer has used in this photograph are central focal point because the model is in the centre of the page and is in focus. In my opinion, I can tell that the photographer has used this rule of central focal point because this picture of the mans face is framed by the plain background. I think the photographer has used a small F Stop because he wanted to only keep focus on the model face to keep the features of his face in focus and sharp. I think the photographer has used a larger F Stop on the image of the trees to capture a clear photograph of the forest. The White Balance which could have been used is Tungsten because the image of the model has been taken indoors. I think the White Balance used on the trees would be Daylight because the photo has been taken outdoors in the evening. In my opinion, the ISO which could have been used is ISO 800 because the photograph has captured the details of the shadow on the man's face. The Shutter Speed which could have been used is 1.125 because the image is clear and in focus. I believe that the image has been taken using a tripod because the photograph isn't blurred. The photographer have used the Rule of Triangle this is seen in each corners of the mans shoulders and the top of the neck, this looks like to be in the shape of a triangle. The leading lines in this image are the trees on his shoulders because they are leading to his face because it is the central focal point.
Context:
I like this photograph because in my opinion the way the photographer has made this edit using mountains and trees but also using black and white to highlight to us that the boy is sad and feeling quite low and in my opinion it’s impressive and the edits quite complex. A strength for this photograph is the editing because it’s very complex and explains a lot but a weakness I would give for this image is that the photographer could have maybe told the model to look directly at the camera so we can see his emotions through his eyes.

Annie Leibovitz:
Context:
This photograph was taken on 8th December 1980 by a photographer named Annie Leibovitz. She was born on 2nd October 1949. Annie Leibovitz is an American Photographer. It has been an interest in taking portraits and photographs to Annie Leibovitz. Annie Leibovitz first started painting at San Francisco Art Institute she then visited Japan with her mother and bought her first camera, when she returned back to San Francisco she signed up for a photography class which got her interested in photography, her photographs at the Art institute of Chicago but she works and lives in New York.
Content:
Annie Leibovitz is known to take photographs that shows exaggeration and emotions. This type of image is known as Portrait Photography. This image shows a young girl showing a blank expression which could mean that the little girl could have a strong emotion on the inside but is not showing it.
Composition:
The girl's eyes are placed in a sweet spot. This is shown because the girl is in the middle of this image and is looking directly at you. Her hair creates a leading line across the image. This is effective because it makes the viewer look at another section of the image. In my opinion she has used a low F Stop so probably between F2 and F5. The photographer has made the background out of focus using the colors black and blue, In my opinion I like how she uses the color blue because it brings out the color in her eyes. The photographer has used the lighting in a way to make it more dramatic, this is because the girl has a blank expression. In my opinion the atmosphere in this image seems to be dull and gloomy. In my opinion the photographer has used foreground, middle ground and background. The foreground of this image is the girl's hair because it’s the closest object towards the camera. The middle ground of this object is the girl because she is between both her hair and the dark background and the background of this photo is the blended background. This shot is framed in a focal point view that is shown because the girl is the subject of the image. I think the photo has been taken using a tripod because the camera has been taken at the same height as the girl. I think the photographer has used the white balance tungsten because this image has been taken indoors. The ISO which I think the photographer has used is ISO200 because the background is dark and focuses more on the girl. The Shutter Speed which I think has been used is 1/125 because the image is clear, I think the F Stop being used is F/8 because the lighting in the image seems to be perfect and not to dark. In this photograph the photographer uses central focal point because the girl is in the middle of the image.
Comment:
A strength to this image is that the photographer has used the space effectively and made her eyes stand out. A weakness to this image is that the photographer could maybe do this photo again without the girl's hair in her face so that we are able to see the girl's right eye more. I could use these skills to improve my skills by using more central focal point and take my photographs with a suitable amount of space so that my photos are not too close or far away from the model.

Mock Analysis:
Content:
This photograph is known as portrait photography. In this photograph I see a young girl showing half her face with a blank expression. In my opinion, the flower underneath her eye represents energy and sympathy. I also believe that this photograph is a realistic photo because none of it has been exaggerated. The photographer has used a limited color like purple because it matches her lips and her eye colors match the background. This makes it stand out because on the color wheel purple and pink are next to each other. In this picture I can see the girl's smooth light, pale skin and freckles on her face and her thin ginger hair.
Composition:
The compositional rule being used in this image is rule of thirds, this is shown because the girl's eyes are on the left side in the image. Her eyes are placed in the sweet spot, this is shown because her eyes stand out the most throughout the whole image. By using the rule of thirds the photographer has used this rule to make the viewer focus on the main focal point of the image. In this image the photographer has used foreground and background. The foreground of this image is the purple flower because it’s the closest object to the camera and the middle ground is the girl's face because it’s between the flower and the background which is the the out of focus section. This affects the picture because the photographer makes it seem like she is looking directly at us, this gives us the impression that there is a strong connection between us and the girl. The viewpoint in this image has an eye level and central focal point. I know this because the camera has taken this photograph at the same height as the girl's eyes. The one strand of the girl's hair creates a leading line across the image. In my opinion the photographer has used a low F stop between F1.0 and F2.8 because the photograph is bright and background is out of focus, this image has been taken outside which is why a lower F stop is needed because otherwise if a higher F stop is used then the background will be in focus. In my mind the White Balance used in this photo is daylight because this photograph has been located outside. This image does not seem to be over exposed since it might have been located outside, if this image was taken inside it would be over exposed but I think this image has been taken with a perfect white balance and F stop. In my opinion the ISO used in this is ISO600 because this image seems to be bright. This photograph doesn’t really seem like there has been photoshop but they might have used a blurring tool to make the flower become out of focus. The main color being used is purple. This stands out because the purple flower reflects on the young girl's cheek, in my opinion this is effective because the purple contrasts with the color of her lips. The different texture within this photograph is that the girl's hair is smooth and shiny.
Connection:
I really like this photograph. What I really like about this image is how the photographer reflects the flower on her cheek. This is effective because the flower brings out the color in her eyes. This work is far more detailed and effective than the photo I took. A strength for this image is that the photographer has arranged this image to show the entire picture just like how the photographer has hoped for. A weakness to this image is that the flower goes on top of the girl's eye, it could be better if the flower reflection was more below her eyes.
Inspiration:
I will be using this image as inspiration for my future shoots because it is very effective. I would want my image to be in focus and hope to make the white balance and F stop perfect. I could get a prop to place above the camera to use as a reflection to make my image more effective than it being boring and dull. I hope to achieve an image like this because in my opinion it’s very powerful because the girl’s expression is that she is calm and relaxed.

Portrait Photoshoot 1:
Yellow Backdrop:
Best:This is my best image because it's in focus and in focus and the model is in the right position. I like how the shadow is reflected on the yellow backdrop. I also like how this photograph has been taken from a central focal point. The F Stop which I have used in this photograph is F22, White balance I have used is Auto, ISO I have used is ISO800 and the shutter speed that I have used is between 1/125 or 1/60.
|
Worst:This is my worst image because it is out of focus and not clear. I have used manual focus and haven't set it to exposure I have moved the camera around which is why it has become blurry and not in focus. The F Stop which I used in this photograph is F1.0, White balance is still Auto, ISO I have used is ISO800 which is good but the picture became out of focus and the shutter speed I have used is 1.15.
|
Black Backdrop:
Best:This is my best image because it's clear and in focus, the model is in perfect position. I like how the shadow is formed onto the blue backdrop. I like her expression because it makes her look like a professional model. The white stripe on her jumper and the yellow of the ball contrast nicely with the navy blue and is framed in central focal point.
|
Worst:This is my worst image I may have used the wrong white balance and potentially the wrong F stop. The F stop which I used is F2.0, The ISO I used is ISO 200 which is why this photograph came out to be too dark. The white balance I used is Auto and I used a low shutter speed of 1.15 which is why the photograph turned out to be out of focus.

Plan made by Alex:
Plan for Shoots:
Name:
Alex Clark, Emily Moorhouse, Amal Ahmed and Laaibah Mohammed
Project Title/ shoot number:
Group Portrait shoot.
Description of aims for shoot:
To imitate portrait photography of different photographers, experiment with new equipment and work with a professional photographer.
Links with Photographers:
We are hoping to imitate and recreate photographs by Mario Testino and Annie Leibovitz.
Location:
Studio Shoot.
Props/ items needed:
Fashion accessories.
Kit needed e.g. lighting, tripod, backdrop, macro lens:
Backdrops, canon 50mm lens
Camera settings I will use:
F-Stop:
It will vary from photo to photo however I think we will need a low f-stop as for most of the photos the background is out of focus.
White Balance:
As it is a studio shoot we may use fluorescent but it may vary depending on the specific lighting on the day.
Shutter speed:
Since we are not trying to capture any movements in the photograph, we can use a fast shutter speed (such as 1/1000) to avoid any blurring.
ISO:
We do not want to capture too much grain in our images so hopefully we can use 100 or 200.
Which compositional rules will I use?
We’re hoping to take photos with a central focal point and utilizing the rule of thirds for our framing, asymmetry for most if not all photos.

Best:This is my best image because the model is ready although the white balance has a negative effect on the photograph. The F Stop I have used is F/1.0, White Balance I have used is Auto, ISO I have used is either ISO 400 or ISO 200 and the shutter speed I have used is 1.60.
|
Worst:This is my worst image because the model isn't ready as his eyes are shut, although the white balance is good it still a bit dark. The F Stop, ISO and Shutter Speed are the same.
|
My Photoshoot with Nihaal:
This is my best Image because the F Stop, White Balance, ISO and Shutter Speed is perfect. The model is ready and is in focus and the shadow has a big effect on the photograph.
|
This is my worst image because it's too dark. F Stop I have used is F/16 with a dark exposure, White balance I have used is Auto, I have used a low ISO of ISO 100, Shutter Speed which I have used is 1/250.

Worst: |
This is my best image because the white balance is perfect and isn't too bright or too dark the camera quality is clear and not out of focus and the model is stood perfectly. The ISO which I have used is ISO180. The F Stop which I have used is F8. The shutter speed which I have used is 1.250. The white balance which I used is Daylight.
|
This is my worst image because the model is not ready although the white balance is still good and is not blurry it could have been better.
|
Salford Quays:
Best:This is my best image because the white balance, ISO, shutter speed and F stop is perfect and the model is stood perfectly. I could make this photo better by taking it from a different angle. The ISO which I used is ISO180. The F stop which I have used is F8. The shutter speed which I have used is 1.250. The white balance which I have used is Daylight.
|
Worst:This is my worst photo because the model wasn't in position and her eyes was shut. To overcome this I would make sure the model is ready and maybe take from a different angle.
|
This is my best image because the rule of thirds is being used and you can see all of the buildings and the ocean in the backgrounds. The ISO which I used is ISO180. The F stop which I have used is F8. The shutter speed which I have used is 1.250. The white balance which I have used is Daylight.
|
This is my worst image because the model wasn't ready and the camera wasn't held straight, to overcome this I would make sure the model is ready and I am holding the camera straight and maybe move the F Stop so that the background is slightly out of focus.
|
Bridge:
Best:This is my best photo because the white balance is perfect as well as the ISO, F stop and shutter speed. This is shown because it's not too dark and not too bright. The ISO which I used is ISO180. The F stop which I have used is F8. The shutter speed which I have used is 1.250. The white balance which I have used is Daylight.
|
Worst:This is my worst photo because the model is laughing and not ready and also there are people in the background.
|
Fairy Garden:
Best:This is my best image because it's clear and the sun is shining on her face and the logo. The negative impact on this photograph is that the white balance is wrong. The ISO which I used is ISO400. The F stop which I have used is F8. The shutter speed which I have used is 1.250. The white balance which I have used is Cloudy.
|
Worst:This is my worst image because it's slightly out of focus and I accidently took this photo landscape instead of portrait and the model isn't ready.

Evaluation:
For this project I have chosen the theme Portraits. I loved doing this theme because in my opinion I have learnt a lot about other photographers and the way they take their photographs which helped me increase my knowledge and skills. During the Easter Holidays a professional photographer Justin came to our school and allowed us to take part in a photoshoot, I really enjoyed being apart of this because we haven’t just learnt how to model in front of the camera but also using the equipment like the tripod and special light effects to take photos of our partner for high quality photos. I am proud of my progress whilst doing this project because I have learned how to make more developed images and got more comfortable with creating edits. Whilst creating edits I have used my own knowledge but I have also watched YouTube videos for support, I have also used the YouTube videos to help me recreate more complex edits. I also did combined edits when I tested 2 different outcomes together
to create a more complex edit. The photographer which I have used to research are Annie Leibovitz, Magdiel Lopez and Peter Lindernburgh
