Statement of Intent:
What is your chosen theme and why have you chosen to study this?
My chosen theme is Texture, I will be looking at Natural and Man Made Texture. I have chosen this type of Texture because we are unable to go outside to take outdoor photos due to covid. You can go outside but where you can go is limited. I have also chosen to study this subject because I believe that I am able to use all the skills that I have learnt in photography in 1 image. To take these pictures I will be walking around school and looking for objects that have textures. I will be researching more about Edward Weston and Lucy Shires because they both do natural and manmade textures and I will be trying to find out how I will angle my shoots to make it picture perfect. My aim to get a perfect picture will be to make sure it stays in focus
What research do you intend to carry out based on this theme?
In order for me to create a successful piece I will need to get a variety of information on photographers, subject and style of technique to use on my chosen theme. The photographers I will research will be Roe Ethridge, Lucy Shires and Edward Weston. I have chosen these photographers because they are used to taking photographs of manmade/natural textures and have more of an understanding. I will be researching what camera settings and what angles they have used in their photograph so that I am able to have more knowledge
What photoshoots do you intend to complete during the project to help explore the chosen topic?
I intend to capture a variety of images on my chosen subject “Texture” I will be taking several photoshoots on both Manmade and Natural Textures. I will be taking photoshoots of trees, leaves, rust, rough or smooth textures. I will be doing this indoor and outdoor so that I can keep working on my skills. I will intend to use different equipment's such as lighting, tripod and micro lenses.
Which artists, photographers, galleries do you intend to research in order to support this project?
I will be doing research on different artists and photographers who take photographs of Manmade and Natural texture. The photographers that I will be researching will be Lucy Shires and Imogen Cunningham . By doing some research on these photographers I will be able to increase my knowledge and be able to take photographs as good as these photographers. Lucy Shires uses vintage and neutral colors in her work and Imogen Cunningham uses black and white in her work.
What technique with the camera, darkroom and photoshop would you like to use to help develop the theme?
Throughout this project, I will be using different techniques using the camera. I will be walking around school for my chosen topic. I will be using the manual setting on the camera. Whilst taking the photograph I will be making sure it’s in focus and not blurry. I will be testing out different ISO Setting, Shutter Speed and Apertures to try and bring out the photos. After taking some photos I will choose 3 of my best images and edit them to really enhance them. I will try to use photoshop to make my image similiar to Imogen Cunningham in black and white. I would like to explore kaleidoscopes and patterns to enhance my images.
What do you hope to learn more about in doing this project?
Whilst doing this project, I hope to learn more about Textures so I am able take more photos and carry out more research on photographers, also I hope all of my techniques that I have learnt throughout photography so far will create a perfect image.
What do you see your final format as being?
I see my final format being a gallery of three to five photographs of each edits. These photographs will be taken from my best photoshoots and will showcase my best work. I will be trying to aim for my final photograph of Texture to be shown as they have been described. My final gallery will be digital rather than physical.

This photograph was taken in 1927, in this photograph it shows a picture of a shell in black and white. This is an example of a still life photograph because it's an object. It’s an realistic photograph because it’s a shell in black and white in a straight ratio. In my opinion the idea behind this photographer enjoys taking pictures of shells this is because he was inspired by the photographer Alfred Stieglitz. He started to enjoy taking photographs of shells from a meeting in 1927 with a Californian painter Henrietta Shore. Edward was inspired by the photographer Alfred Stieglitz, his aim was to give a new meaning of mundane objects. In this photograph the atmosphere seems to be gloomy and boring because it's very dark and dull. The texture in this photograph is that the shell is smooth and shows a shine on the top. The photographer has cleverly used two shells. The photographer has arranged this to make it seem like one shell has been used. The
Context:
This photograph was published in 1927. He was born on 24 March 1886 in Highland Park, Illinois, U.S. The title of this photograph is Nautilus, This photo is a portrait photograph of a shell. The title meaning of this photograph is Sailor and the curves of the shell represent the waves. In my opinion this photograph is not a realistic photo. Edward Weston is known for making his photos in focus. Edward Weston takes a variety of different type of pictures such as showing texture, still life, portraits and more.
"Weston was born in Chicago and moved to California when he was 21. He knew he wanted to be a photographer from an early age, and initially his work was typical of the soft focus pictorialism that was popular at the time."

Composition:
The rule being used in this photograph is close up and a central focal point , this gives us more of a natural and dramatic photograph. In the photograph there are two shells one slotted on top of the other. Edward Weston has used a central focal point you can tell because the object is in the centre of attention. This photograph has been taken in a studio. I know this because it has a spotlight on the top of the shell. The first thing we see in this photograph is a close up shell . This shot is framed with a central focus point. I know this because of the positioning of the shell. I think the aperture being used in this photo is a low F stop because of the medium depth of field which makes the background out of focus. The black and white tends to contrast because in my opinion the white shell contrast with the black background. Making the black and white aesthetically pleasing. The white curve in the background mimics the curve of the shell in the 3D form. The shine at the top shows the reflection of the spotlight. I think Edward Weston has taken this photograph without a tripod. In this photograph Edward Weston has used a rule of thirds as the top shell is eye catching. In my opinion rule symmetry has not been used in this photograph. I think the top shelf is a leading point because the spotlight is on which catches your eye. The proportion in this image is the shell taking over the whole photograph. The texture in this photograph is smooth and rough, where the light is hitting on the top shell is showing a smooth texture. In this photograph the ISO which Edward Weston has used is F/12. Edward Weston uses an ISO200 because in his photo he uses a small aperture using a 30 second exposure aka shutter speed. The location of this photograph is in a studio. In this photograph there is a background and foreground.
Connection:
What I like about this photograph is the clear focus on the close up. What I dislike about this photograph is that the background is too dark and doesn't contrast with the shells. In this piece he is experimented with different camera settings so it's clear and focused. Their work compared to my work is different as they use dark backgrounds whereas, I use lighter backgrounds. In my future shoots with texture I could manipulate my images in dark backgrounds like he does.
Comment:
In the future I could try and keep the lenses focused when taking the picture so it doesn't because out of focus. I have also done a photoshoot in his style. I could try to make my photos similiar to his by arranging the shells and using a dark background

In the picture there are two red apples with a green background. This is an example of a still life photo, it is an realistic photograph because there is a chopped apple with little pieces of apples in a formation with wasps eating it. In my opinion the idea behind the work has been made to demonstrate the wasps are eating the apples, but there is too much and it can kill the wasps. The colors being used are green and red which is an example of complementary colors are effective because they tend to go good together. The title of this photo is “C’est pas du luxe” which means if you buy too much fruit/food then too much will be wasted, this changes the way I see the photo because a wasp cannot eat this whole apple which means it will be wasted. This photo shows that people should not waste food.
Context:
This photograph, called C’est Pas Le Luxe was taken by a photographer called Roe Ethridge. This picture was published in the book Le Luxe, which shows his past arts. Ethridge has worked since 2012. He was born on 8 August 1969 and got a degree in Photography at The Atlanta College of Arts, after receiving his degree in 1997 he moved to New York City and began working as a commercial photographer. "Ethridge creates images that are simultaneously generic and intimate, often treading between humor and cynicism." (http://www.andrewkreps.com/artists/roe-ethridge)
Composition:
The rule being used in this photograph is the depth of fields. It gives us a more natural look. The lens of the camera shows a picture of each side of the photo. The first thing we see as soon as we look in the photograph are the apples and wasps, the wasps eating small but big pieces of apples. The positions of the apples are in the center but it can be seen a variety of ways. The light that has been is studio light this is because one part of the picture has the shine of the spotlight. Roe Ethridge has also used the rule of evens , by four pieces of apples two whole apples and six wasps. This gives an unnatural feeling. I think the ISO being used is ISO 400 because the image is bright and there is not too much visual noise. I think the F Stop being used is F5.6 because the background is out of focus, middleground and foreground is in focus because the apple and bees are clear. I think Roe Ethridge has used a fast shutter speed (1/250) so that the photographer can get the bees in action, if the shutter speed was slow then it will become blurry because the bees are moving. I believe Roe Ethridge could have used the white balance Tungsten, Fluorescent or Flash because this picture was taken outside. I think Roe Ethridge took this photograph without a tripod. I think Roe Ethridge has used a rule of thirds because in my opinion the bees on the apple is eye catching. I think Roe Ethridge has used central focal point a bit in this photograph because all of the objects are in the center but is also on the side. In my opinion the rule symmetry has not been used. I think in this photograph the leading line is the little piece of apple with bees on it because it catches your attention. The proportion in this photograph is apples cut into pieces because it takes over the image. The texture in this picture is smooth ,hard and rigid, yet again the spotlight hitting the apple makes it look smooth.
Connection:
What I like about this photograph is that the out of focus in the background is clear and is focused in the middle of the photo. What I dislike about this photograph is that there is too much light at the bottom of the photo. This photo links to my photograph because my photographs are usually bright and out of focus in the background. A strength I would give is I like the out of focus in the background because it really shows where they want the blur effect at. A weakness I would give is to try to dim the ISO settings so it isn’t to bright.
Comment:
In my opinion the work is really good and I could use these rules in future shoots. I could explore cutting out fruits to see the texture. I could use the F Stop and make my images out of focus. I could also try to make my photos similar to his by arranging the fruits. He uses a spotlight in his work so I could try to use this in my work.

I will be taking pictures in the style of Lucy Shires: How she does extreme closeups and how she looks at the line and textures within the object.
Location:
Indoor, Outdoor
Props/ items needed:
No props needed as I will be searching for objects in school
Kit needed:
Tripod, Macro lens
Camera settings I will use:
F-Stop:
I will experiment this with the F Stop between 5-11
White Balance:
When outdoors I will use a Cloudy or I will use a Daylight setting, and for indoor photos I will use the white balance of Fluorescent.
Shutter speed:
The shutter speed I will be using would be 1/125
ISO:
The ISO I will be using is ISO 200
Which compositional rules will I use?
The compositional rules that I will use which are inspired by Lucy Shires are Leading Lines, Symmetry, Central Focal Point. Lucy Shires photographed the patterns of the texture from birds eye view and worm's eye view to really focus on the detail of the texture from different points of view, having an understanding of Lucy Shires techniques has given me inspiration to photograph manmade textures in this way.

ManMade Outdoor/Indoor Photos:
This is my best picture because it's in focus and it shows the full picture. The ISO that I have used is 100, The F stop that I have used is F22. To make this better I will maybe use a slightly lower ISO so that it's not too bright. I have used a large depth of field.
|
This is my worst image because it's too dark. The ISO that I have used is ISO 6400, The F stop that I have used is F16. I have used a large depth of field. To make this better I will use a lower ISO so that it's not too dark.
|
Materials:
This is my best image because it is close up and focused, the spotlight shows up at the top of the image making the top of the sponge look like sand. I also really like how the background is blurry and the lines of the spotlight. The ISO which I have used is ISO800. The F Stop which I have used is F2. The shutter speed which I have used is 1.125. The White Balance which I have used is Tungsten.
|
This is my worst image because there is no focus, it's dark and it's blurry overall and there is no light shining from the top, In order to make this better I need focus the lens to make the background blurry and the actual picture focused, and use a spotlight to make it similar to the picture on the left.

Sweetcorn:
Best: |
Worst: |
This is my best image because it is focused and shows the full picture. The F Stop I have used is F11 with a short depth of field. I have used ISO 800. To make this a bit more better I will take the photograph from a distance and take it from a birds eye view.
|
This is my worst image because it's dark. The F Stop I have used is F8 with a short depth of field. I have used ISO 400. To make this better I will use a higher white balance, take the photograph from a distance so it's not too close up and take it as a rule of thirds.
|
Pomegranate:
Best:This is my best image because it's a close up and shows the details of the pomegranate, the white balance is perfect, Although, the image wasn't really what I had in mind it's still a good enough picture because of all the details. The ISO which I have used is ISO1600. The F Stop which I have used is F11. The shutter speed which I have used is Tungsten.
|
Worst:This is my worst image because it's out of focus and not clear although the white balance is good. To make this better I will put it in focus and try to hold the camera still.
|
Tomato:
Best: |
Worst: |
This is my best image because the white balance is perfect and isn't too bright it. The spotlight on the top left of the tomato gives more effect and makes this photograph a lot better. To make this photo more better I could have taken this from a distance. The ISO which I have used is ISO1600. The shutter speed which I have used is 1.90. The F Stop which I have used is F8. The white balance which I have used is Tungsten.
|
This is my worst image because it's blurry and out of focus although the white balance is good it was still blurry probably because of low shutter speed to make this better I could have taken it from a distance and put it more in focus.
|
Cabbage:
Best:This is my best image because it's clear and and the white balance is perfect and the out of focus is effective, Although it would have been better if it became out of focus in the background and if the black background covered the whole picture. The F Stop being used in F/1.0, White Balance I used is Auto, ISO I used is ISO 400, Shutter Speed I used is 1.150.
|
Worst:This is my worst image because it's out of focus and blurry because I moved the camera. The other reason could be because I may have had a low shutter speed. To overcome this in the future I could make sure the shutter speed is correct and for me to use a tripod.
|
Grapefruit:
This is my best image because it's focused although it's a little blurry and shows the juice on the orange clearly and the spotlight. The F Stop I have used would be F5 with a short depth of field. I have used ISO 1600. To make this a little more better I would focus it more so it does not become blurry and maybe use a lower ISO so it's not too bright.

This is my worst image because it's out of focus, and seems to be bright which means I must have been using the wrong white balance. The F Stop I have used is F5.6 with a short depth of field. I have used ISO 800. In order to make this better I would use a lower white balance and try to focus more on the object so it does not become blurry.

Kaledioscope Moodboard:
By Gina Soden
Gina Soden is a British photographer who is based in London, she has an art career and is known for creating kaleidoscopes, most of her Kaleidoscopes are at abandoned house to show us the texture for example the decaying walls.
Vegatables:
I have chosen to use google slides to create these Kaliedoscopes edits, I chose a variety of images from different themes to create these final edits. Below I have used the same method to all of my other Kaliedoscopes below. I have also used this video which my teacher has created to support us and watch as guidance for creating an kaliedoscope

Wall Shoot:
Best:This is my best image because it's clear and I love how the background is out of focus and how the camera focuses on the texture. The ISO which I have used is ISO 1600. The shutter speed which I have used is 1/1000. The F stop which I have used is F2.8. The white balance which I have used is Daylight.
|
Worst:This is my worst image because it's out of focus and white balance is too high and brightens the actual texture. To overcome this I will lower the white balance and keep the camera steady.
|
Spider Webs:
This is my best image because you can see the spider web and and the rainbow on the web is effective. Although the web is out of focus and shows a negative effect the shadow is still effective. The ISO which I have used is ISO1600. The shutter speed which I have used is 1.90. The F Stop which I have used is F8. The white balance which I have used is Daylight.
|
This is my worst image because the ISO is high, I used the wrong white balance, The shutter speed in this image is also low which is why it is out of focus also because of the camera shaking.
|
Tree:
Best:This is my best image because it's clear and the sun has a big effect on the photograph. The ISO which I have used is ISO1600. The F Stop which I have used is F16. The shutter speed which I have used is 1.250. The white balance which I have used is Daylight.
|
Worst:This is my worst image because it's slightly out of focus, too bright and there is people in the photo. My ISO is not too high but it's slightly high for this image since the sun was already shining which made the image more brighter.
|
Shells
Best:This is my best image because it is focused and it shows the spotlight. The F Stop I have used is F5.6 with a short depth of field. I have used ISO1600. I think to make this better I could take the photograph from far away and use a birds eye view.
|
Worst:This is my worst image because it's dark and need a higher ISO. The F Stop I have used is F16 with a short depth of field. I have used ISO 100. In order to make this better I would use a higher ISO and White Balance so that it isn't too dark.

Basic Manipulations Edward Weston:
In this edit I have linked this to Edward Weston black and white photos although in his photos it's quite smooth I have decided to edit these so that you are able to see the texture inside the image. I decided to use this image because the rule of thirds has been used and seems to be bigger and could make my edits more effective.
Basic Manipulations Edward Weston:
I have used the same technique of black and white from the inspiration of Edward Weston.

Surreal Edit:
Surrealism aims to transform the human experience. It is an art movement about dreams and the unconscious mind. The movement's artists find magic and strange beauty in the unexpected part of your mind. They disregard the conventional and replace with highly imaginative images.
"Surrealism originated in the late 1910s and early '20s as a literary movement that experimented with a new mode of expression called automatic writing, or automatism, which sought to release the unbridled imagination of the subconscious."

The role of pinterest has played heavily in the moodboards below, a lot of the images are made from unknown artists.

Evaluation:
This project theme was Natural and Man-made Texture. I found this project enjoyable and quite creative because you can make a simple photo very aesthetic with different objects. The part of the project I found most interesting was taking photographs because you have the chance to try out the camera. I have experienced a variety of techniques using the camera for example worm eyes view and bird eyes view, to take photographs using rule of thirds, depth of fields and many more, also using Photoshop and Photopea to edit my photos to make it more creative. A technique I would like to develop further is learning how to use the camera settings more by knowing exactly what these two white balances mean: incandescent and fluorescent so I can use them in my future shoots. Through this project I have researched three photographers Lucy Shires, Edward Weston and Imogen Cunningham. With the research on these photographers, I have used them on my images to make my photographs similar to theirs. I feel like the most successful part of this project was both my analysis because I feel like I have described the photograph and researched about it to the best I could have done. I feel like a problem I had with this project was doing edits and making kaleidoscopes and had to redo most of them, Although another problem I had was my mood boards not being neat but I have now improved the layout, Lastly another problem I had was that we only had a few areas to take pictures due to covid so this meant I had to try and take my photos the best I could. If I could redo this project again, I would take more photos of fruits and vegetables again by arranging them into different positions and taking the photos from different angles.
